Pregnancy test negative: Still pregnant?
Pregnancy test negative. A pregnancy test can usually be used to determine a pregnancy very reliably. There are self-tests available in shops or pharmacies that determine pregnancy using the hormone HCG in the urine. This hormone is produced in a healthy female body only during pregnancy and is, among other things, very important for maintaining pregnancy. Immediately after the mature egg has been fertilized, it excretes the hormone.
Among other things, it is responsible for ensuring that no more eggs are produced and that no further pregnancy can occur. But at the beginning the amount is still very small, only gradually it becomes higher and reaches its highest level in the 12th SSW. From the 20th SSW onwards it is rather found in small amounts in the urine. A pregnancy test can therefore possibly even be negative, although you are pregnant.
The reasons for a negative pregnancy test
If you are pregnant and the pregnancy test is still negative, there can be several reasons for this. Often the wrong use is a reason for the negative test result. If you have had the pregnancy test for a while, be sure to store it at room temperature and check for any deficiencies before use. It is recommended to perform the pregnancy test immediately after getting up with the first urination. After a long rest, the hormone is very strongly contained in the urine. Women who work at night should therefore only carry out the test after an extensive sleep break.
Also be careful not to keep the test in your urine for too long or too short. The test may also have been used too early, so that the HCG content is not yet sufficient to reliably determine the pregnancy. It is therefore advisable not to carry out the test until your period has normally started. In some cases, the pregnancy test may be negative even though you are pregnant. With an early pregnancy test, the test can even be carried out a few days in advance.
What to do if the pregnancy test is negative?
If your pregnancy test is negative and there is a possibility that you are pregnant, you should definitely repeat the test. But not immediately afterwards. Either wait until the time when your menstruation should normally start and perform the test immediately after waking up.
If you are afraid of not being able to hold the test under the urine stream, it can help to urinate into a container and then briefly hold the test in. If the test is negative again, you can usually assume that you are not pregnant. If the test is positive at the second attempt, this is a good sign of pregnancy.
If your menstruation continues to fail and does not begin, there may be various reasons that cannot always be traced back to a pregnancy. Women who have stress, a cold or mental problems can get their menstruation later due to this stress.
Consult your gynecologist if your period does not start. He or she can use a blood test to determine whether you are pregnant or not and why your period is not starting.
